We have been hearing rumors of a potential smart glass from Apple for years now. Just today, The US Patent & Trade Office published a parent from Apple relating to its smart ring project. The smart ring could be used for AR, VR and MR applications as suggested.
The system will be useful to track a user’s finger movement and identify a user’s gestures. The dual ring system can be very useful in context with Mixed Reality applications. Finger rings worn on a user’s thumb and index finger may be used to identify gestures such as a pinch, zoom, and rotate.
According to an image, the ring could be used with an object like an Apple Pencil in AR, VR, and MR applications.
According to Patently Apple, this is not the first time Apple has applied for a smart ring patent. Apple actually started working on it from 2015. Also in last March, Apple won a patent for a ring accessory which was mainly designed to work with VR glasses or a headset that is more accurate than wearing VR gloves.

This newer patent uses a different method with a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) sensor-based gesture input system. An SMI sensor can be used to optically measure the relative motion (displacement) between the SMI sensor and a target object or surface with sub-wavelength resolution.
As it's just a parent, we can't be sure if it will ever come out or not. But there are rumors that the smart Apple glasses will arrive as early as 2022.
