Android 12 might add a new theming system which can even recolor apps

Android 12 is expected to arrive later this year. With that in mind the first reports of new features in this software update have started showing up online. According to a new report from 9to5Google, Google is working on an improved theming engine.

At present the theme engine is pretty basic on stock Android 11 devices. You can only choose between light and dark themes, and change a few accent colors, that's it.

According to the report the native theming engine will let users pick two colors. One, a primary color which will be applies to the background of notifications and quick settings tiles. The other one will affect the existing accent color which applies to icons and sliders.

Google may also give the developers the chance to implement this theming engine in their apps. So if the developers are onboard we might see more apps supporting it in the future.

9to5Google has also made some themed mockups.

As shown in the mockup you will be able to paint Google Play Store in red and black (primary and accent) colors instead of the existing green and white theme in Android 12.

The Android 12 update might also be able to suggest you theme ideas based on your current wallpaper.

But as the theming engine is currently in development, we can't be sure if it would end up in the final update. It may show up in developer builds but could be scrapped prior to official release later.

  1. Wow, those mockups are ugly as sin. Let's not go back to 2009 style crappy themes please.

    1. The actual one will follow the material design principal so they will look better. It's just a mockup to give us a clear idea about how it may look.
