The latest Sony State of Play live-stream focused on The Last of Us Part II which is set to release very soon on the 19th of June.
"The State Of Play" featured the game director Neil Druckmann, who discussed about the settings and revealed more information about story's setting and the various enemy faction, new mechanics, and most importantly, the new types of Infected.
The Last Of Us Part 2: State Of Play, Recap.
1. Story Details:
Neil Druckmann confirmed the story will be taking 5 years after the events of the first game, and Ellie is now 19 years old and both her and Joel are living in Jackson, Wyoming along with Tommy and his wife Maria.
He explained that Ellie will go through a traumatic event which will lead her down to a revenge war path and seek retribution from a certain cult which is a new enemy faction. This faction was seen in the previous 2 trailers.
The game's story will take place over multiple seasons and settings, but Neil Druckmann confirmed the majority of the Last of Us Part II will take place in the city of Seattle.
The new gameplay introduces us with a character named Nora. The 10-minute gameplay ended with Ellie confronting "Nora". The confrontation might suggest Ellie and Nora had a run-in in the past.
2. Gameplay Details:
The biggest addition to the gameplay, as confirmed by Neil Druckmann, is the addition of a dedicated "jump button", allowing for more options in traversal. Seeing as Ellie is a much younger character than Joel, it makes sense for her to have more traversal freedom.
In Last Of Us Part 1 we saw through the whole gameplay Ellie was dependent on Joel when crossing any waterbed. Joel used to carry her when he was swimming. But in Last Of Us Part 2 Ellie can swim. In addition to swimming, Ellie can go prone now.
This Prone feature enables Ellie to go prone under a car or in any tall grasses to hide from the enemies.
Neil Druckmann also explained the Cult enemy faction uses stealth and quiet weaponry such as the Bow and Arrow. Meaning that rather than attacking head on, the cult will use tall grass as camouflage as well and utilise stealth to track Ellie down.
The new gameplay reveals some new improvement for the crafting section in the game. Along with the old crafting materials, we will be seeing new things. It has several new items such as Suppressors for Pistols which will allow more freedom in doing stealth actions.
The addition of dogs is also interesting as enemies will now make use of dogs to hunt Ellie down, making for some exciting gameplay actions and sections.
3. New Infected Types:
In Last Of Us Part 1 we got to see Clickers who were zombies but being affected with the fungus made them blind but improved their hearing capability. Along with the Runners and Bloaters. In the new installment there are several new Infected enemy types that are sure to give player's a tough time through the game.
While the Clickers were always a terrifying enemy type, the Stalkers in the Last of Us Part II seem pretty nasty as well. Stalkers will hide in silence until it is the perfect time to pounce on the player.
There is a new Infected type known as Shamblers, which is essentially an armored Infected and will explode when they get near the players and releases corrosive elements which will burn it's victims.
There is another type of Infected which Neil Druckmann said in the 10 minute gameplay. Neil Druckmann hinted this type as the "most terrifying and deadly" Infected type but said the players will have to play The Last of Us Part II to find out what they are.
