What If...? Ep. 07: Review and Major Details Explained! (SPOILERS)

SPOILER WARNING! STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE SEVENTH EPISODE!

What If...? Episode 7 puts an alternate universe Thor in the spotlight seeing things differently where the God of Thunder remains the only child of Odin, without growing up with his adopted brother Loki of the Sacred Timeline.

The Story-view

The episode starts off with Thor and the Warriors Three with Sif, "invading" Midgard (Earth), not to rule, but to party. It is revealed that in this alternate universe, Odin returned Loki to the Frost Giants, instead of adopting him as his own son. Being the only child, Thor grew up in a different atmosphere, making him a totally different prince than what we see in live-action. He ends up bringing hundreds of his friends in Las Vegas strip club including Skrulls, Guardians of the Galaxy members, Ravagers, the Sovereign members and many other beings from different galaxies. Jane Foster and Darcy goes to see the "extraterrestrial" beings and meets with Thor. Thor hilariously flirts with Jane while Darcy goes on a date with Howard the Duck.

We get a full montage of Thor, Jane Foster, Nebula, Drax, Korg and many others partying, along with a shot of Darcy and Howard the Duck getting married. S.H.I.E.L.D agents come to control the situation by the authority of Acting Director Maria Hill. She calls Captain Marvel for help using the transmitter given to Nick Fury. On the other side, Frost Giant Loki comes to Earth who seems to be more like a "brother from another mother" to Thor. Together they party rampage on Earth's different countries and continents. Captain Marvel arrives and forces them to leave Earth. This results in a fight among Thor and Captain Marvel and much more chaos. As she fails to stop him, S.H.I.E.L.D decides to let Captain Marvel fight him all out in Siberia.

Meanwhile Jane gets an idea on how to stop Thor and she amplifies voice frequency to get Heimdall's attention. Heimdall shows her a way to Thor's mother Frigga where she explains the Thor situation. Frigga uses dark magic to check on him on Earth and decides to meet him on Earth to see if Thor is really on a "cultural exchange". So, Thor and the others start cleaning up the whole mess they created while Frigga starts her journey to Earth. Even though Thor managed to clean up, Frigga still comes to know of the situation. While leaving, Thor plans a date with Jane in a planet of unicorns and promises to meet at 8.

Thor is about to leave the place as The Watcher starts to bid goodbye by saying "Together, happily ever after." But he is interrupted as a portal opens up with a large number of robots coming in. Along with the robots is Ultron Infinite, in the body of Vision, leading the bots to "really" invade Earth with all of the six infinity stones embedded on the body.

Major Details

While going through Odin's treasure room, an Infinity Gauntlet with all six infinity stones can be spotted behind for a split second. This is obviously the fake Infinity Gauntlet which we also see in Thor movies, specially in Thor: Ragnarok where Hela threw the gauntlet away calling it fake.

Thor hands over a beer to the Executioner to drink saying that it never runs out and it refills automatically like magic. This is a clear nod to Thor: Ragnarok scene where Thor and Loki comes to Earth to see Odin but is met by Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange gives Thor a glass of beer and automatically refiils it using his sorcery. Thor misunderstands Norse Gods and says Horse Gods, which is probably a reference to Beta Ray Bill who has similar characteristics of Thor but looks somewhat like a horse with skull-like features.

There is a shot of Thor winking and lifting a glass at Nick Fury which is surely an intentional reference to the movie The Great Gatsby where Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, made a similar gesture with a glass of drink. The picture went viral even years after the release of the movie, specially in memes which makes Thor's gesture more hilarious.

Thor is seen taking selfie with Ayesha, the Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign, who made her debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and its post-credits scene also hints a possible return of this character in future. While cleaning up, Thor also straightens the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is a fun nod on how the tower is actually leaned in real life.

Ultron Infinite comes through a portal with all six infinity stones embedded in the body. Now, this Ultron Infinite might not be the one from that alternate universe, as for Ultron to exist, the Earth would already have been in chaos. Obviously, Thor was already a part of Avengers when Ultron was accidentally built by Tony in Avengers: Age of Ultron, so this scenario makes it highly possible that this Ultron Infinite is from a different universe, rather than being from that alternate universe.

Final Verdict

Episode 7 of What If...? is a fun and hilarious installment to the show, which fully embraces the comedy and wackiness. The episode nicely shows the impact of siblings in people's socialization and behavior. It also features great action and fun cameos from many cosmic Marvel characters. Chris Hemsworth was absolutely amazing with his voice acting alongside the returning stars Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson and more. The stunning animation makes the party theme of the episode more lively and upbeat.

Rating: 8/10
