Movie theaters had a rough time in 2020 after the massive box office heavy year 2019. Also with the increase of streaming services, many people got worried thinking this might be the end of movie theaters.
The legend thinks the theater industry is far from dead, largely thanks in part to the guaranteed existence of blockbuster films from Marvel Studios and other similar outfits. In a recent chat with Collider, the Hollywood legend Tom Hanks said that the revival of movie theaters lies in the hands of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Tinsel Town's other tentpole franchises.
"A sea change was due, anyway... It was coming. Will movie theaters still exist? Absolutely, they will ..... In some ways, I think the exhibitors — once they're up and open — are going to have the freedom of choice of what movies they’re going to play... Big event motion pictures are going to rule the day at the cinemas." said Tom Hanks.
He added, "News of the World might be the last adult movie about people saying interesting things that's going to play on a big screen somewhere, because after this, in order to guarantee that people show up again, we’re going to have the Marvel Universe and all sorts of franchises."
Due to the pandemic almost all movie theaters were closed for most of 2020. Although they have been reopened, the performance of high budget films like Tenet were very less. Warner Brothers have already announced that all of their 2021 films would be released in HBO Max alongside the theaters on the same date. But Disney seems to still value the theater experience after the devastating performance of Mulan. In this point of time it is hard for us to speculate how the movie theaters would operate in the post pandemic world.
