Meet the new iPadOS 14!
Last year, Apple released iPadOS as a tweaked version of iOS for iPads. Last Monday in WWDC, Apple announced iPadOS 14. As you have guessed, it is yet again a tweaked version of iOS 14 for iPads. Apple showcased a few new capabilities of the iPad and also the Apple Pencil. So here is a rundown of the iPadOS 14 features showcased in WWDC.
Redesigned Widgets
iOS 14 introduced widgets for iPhone home screen. The same applies for iPads. Those redesigned widgets are now available for the iPad. Apple also introduced Smart Stacks, a neat widget option that will automatically cycle through different widgets. Smart Stacks is said to show the most relevant information throughout the day. You can also manually swipe through the different options in the Smart Stack.
App enhancements
iPadOS 14 supports a new sidebar which allows the user to easily navigate through the apps. Toolbars have been streamlined, with new dropdown menus.
Universal Search
iPadOS 14 brings Universal Search for the iPad. With it you can launch apps, find contacts or documents, and search the web. You can also search within apps.
Incoming call notification
Previously when a call came on an iPad, the call would take up the entire screen. It was annoying when it took the entire screen. Now the call notification shows up in a compact form. This call notification is also coming in iOS making your life a bit more easy.
Set default email and browser
Apple users were wanting to change default apps since well.. forever. Finally with iPadOS it is now possible. Apple didn't particularly talk about this feature in their event but in the list of all the features coming to the iPadOS 14, there was a mention of changing default email and browser app. It was first pointed out by YouTuber Marques Brownlee. So now you can select Gmail as your default email app or any other as you wish. It is only limited to mail apps and browser because of security reasons.
Scribble
iPad paired up with Apple Pencil is one of the best team-up in the tech industry. iPadOS 14 brings improvements to the Apple Pencil. iPadOS 14 support Scribble, a built-in handwriting recognition feature. It can now convert your hand-writes into texts. Moreover, when you will draw a shape and pause for a second, iPad will automatically convert that shape into its ideal form. iPadOS 14 can also detect what we write and select those.
iPadOS 14 beta developer beta is out now and the official final release is expected at around the later half of the year.
