The Story-view

A strange thing happened in the Marvel Studios logo scene as we got to hear a lot of lines from past MCU characters like Sam Wilson, Hope, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Thor, Captain America, Star-Lord, Hank Pym, Captain Marvel, Loki, Korg and many other indistinct overlapping chatter while the Captain America dance song went along. We get a glimpse of the space, universe, different universe, and the timeline overlapped by voices of many persons which include Neil Armstrong, Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousufzai, Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou and also Classic Loki, Vision and Sylvie.

Loki and Sylvie enters the castle and they meet Miss Minutes. She offers Loki a chance from He Who Remains, to get back to his timeline, with anything he wishes. But Loki denies as he and Sylvie goes on to find the man behind the curtain. And finally! The man behind the curtain is revealed to be He Who Remains played by Jonathan Majors, who is confirmed to play Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man: Quantumania. He reveals that he is a variant and many of his variants are not as pure-hearted as him. On the other side, Mobius meets up with Renslayer reveals to her that the minutemen will know the truth any minute then. Renslayer is revealed to be a Principal of Franlin D. Roosevelt High School of Ohio from 2018.

He Who Remains reveals that if they kill him, there are infinite amount of his variants who will start a multiversal war. Loki tries to stop Sylvie from killing him, but Sylvie thinks Loki is betraying her. They fight but Loki manages to make her believe as they kiss. But Sylvie throws him to TVA using the device from He Who Remains. Sylvie kills him off and before dying, He Who Remains says, "I'll see you soon", hinting towards the introduction of the Conqueror Kang in future of MCU. The branches start growing, living up to the name "Multiverse of Madness" which will further be explained in the Doctor Strange sequel.

Ending

Mobius and Hunter B-15, alongside whole TVA workers, witness the dangerously spreading branches from the Sacred Timeline. Loki rushes to Mobius and Hunter B-15 who are in the analyst zone of TVA. He tries to explain the things he witness and the danger of the variants of He Who Remains. But Mobius goes on to question his identity. It seems Mobius and all others have been brainwashed or these are some other variants as the multiversal madness has already started growing or Loki was sent to a different universe or timeline. Mobius and Hunter B-15 was seen in the room which monitors the Sacred Timeline, so these could be Mobius and Hunter B-15 of different universe or timeline which Loki ends up meeting. Loki feels the difference in the TVA as he goes out to watch the region and he sees a Jonathon Majors character being statue instead of the Time-Keepers, that too in a Kang the Conqueror like outfit. So, this really could be the origin story of our confirmed big bad Kang the Conqueror. Sylvie used the Time-Twister from He Who Remains so this could be the reason why Loki was sent to a different TVA, possibly from a different universe or timeline.

Major Details

Jonathan Majors' character He Who Remains is revealed to be the big bad for the series, though he is confirmed to play Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man: Quantumania. In Marvel comics, He Who Remains is the final director and the top one of TVA. He is the one who created Time-Twisters to teach universe. He reveals that there are many more dangerous variants of him which he is afraid of, so He Who Remains in the MCU is actually a variant of still not introduced Kang the Conqueror. He did dropped the word "Conqueror" while describing his identity.

He Who Remains is introduced while eating an apple which holds a biblical importance as it is this fruit which tempted Adam and Eve, which is also in a way He Who Remains tempted Loki and Sylvie of happiness.

Ravonna Renslayer says to Mobius that she is going in search of free will. This doesn't mean she wants free will, but she is actually going to search for the one behind the TVA, who is later on killed by Sylvie. But we don't get anymore scenes of her, so her whereabouts are now unknown. We may get to see Renslayer meeting up with Kang the Conqueror in future, paralleling with the comics.

The technology He Who Remains used to make Loki and Sylvie understand about his variants and his origin, at some point revealed a proper look at Kang the Conqueror's outfit. Though the statue at the end of the episode revealed a bigger and proper look at it, it had no head piece. But the short technology creates Kangs had this proper outfit which we could see in live-action in future.

He Who Remains reveals that he is known by many names, it could hint the different names and versions of him that appeared in comics like Kang the Conqueror, Nathaniel Richards, Immortus, Iron Lad, Rama-Tut etc. But with Kang confirmed for MCU, we never know if we will get multiple version of him in wider MCU.

While describing his origin, he reveals that a 31st Century version of him was a scientist who discovered the different universe stacked upon one another. This variant could actually be Nathaniel Richards, a descendant of Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic of Fantastic Four.

Final Verdict

This was truly a great episode which has opened the door for the future of MCU. Although the episode was quite slow-paced, it was done in a way that it didn't feel boring. The way they displayed Tom Hiddleston's Loki's development was incredibly good. He denied Miss Minutes' offer and said he would write his own destiny which is basically one of the main themes of the season. The music and cinematography was stunning, just how it has consistently been throughout the season. He Who Remain's characterization was the best thing this episode. The way he said he would see Sylvie soon nicely signified how he is free now and we will see a lot of his evil variants and Kang moving forward in MCU, which makes the sentence even more ominous.

Rating: 9/10

A pretty slow paced, yet enjoyable and important episode which nicely set up the MCU multiverse and a future big bad, while giving a satisfying conclusion to the protagonist's arc. A solid finale with a huge cliffhanger which will surely keep fans waiting for the future of the MCU.
