Back in 2012, Google unveiled their smart gasses named Google glass. But due to its high price and bulky design, it couldn't make a significant mark in the market. Google now only makes a version of Google Glass for enterprises. But that it looking to change as Google announced in a recent blog post that they have acquired North. North is known for making the Focals smart glasses.
The value of the deal was not disclosed. Rumors point to Google paying $180 million for the acquisition. Google said the acquisition would help to fulfill their vision of ambient computing.
“We’re building towards a future where helpfulness is all around you, where all your devices just work together and technology fades into the background,” said the senior Vice President of devices and services at Google, Rick Osterloh. He also added in the blog post, “North’s technical expertise will help as we continue to invest in our hardware efforts and ambient computing future.”
Focal 2.0 was going to ship this year until North announced they will not ship the glasses and they will wind down the production of the first generation glasses.
