SPOILERS AHEAD! STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE FOURTH EPISODE!

After last week's thrilling episode, things seem to slow down a little bit. Hawkeye Episode 4 is out now which further dives into the mystery of stolen Rolex watch along with his continued guilt over the death of Natasha Romanoff and fear of losing Kate.

Story-view

The episode starts off right where last episode ended as Jack and Eleanor get a surprise guest, an Avenger. Sitting on a table, Kate and Clint kept mum about what they were actually up to. Eleanor walks Clint to the elevator, asking to keep her daughter out of his business, and taunting how the partnership worked out earlier with Natasha Romanoff. But Clint knows he cannot let Kate alone in this situation and so he promises to look after Kate.

Clint gets to know from his wife Laura that the CEO of Sloan LTD is actually Jack Duquesne and he seems to be laundering money for the "big guy". Laura asks if something else was stolen from the Avengers Compound, referring to the Rolex. Clint understands her and goes to check into the matter. Meanwhile, in Eleanor's apartment, she talks about Kate being obsessed with Hawkeye. She asks Kate to help her in arranging the Christmas party of the company and later on we see Jack and Eleanor dance, happier than ever (according to Kate).

Clint returns to Kate's aunt's place but he is interrupted by Kate and her pizza dog. As learned before, it's movie marathon night and so Kate comes in with huge collection of movies to celebrate with his lone idol. Clint breaks the news of Jack being the CEO of Sloan LTD to Kate. We get a long mentor-mentee scene between Clint and Kate. Kate figures out Clint is actually the Ronin. Clint explains to Kate on him being a weapon, aimed by the right people at the right target. As Kate leaves, Clint turns off his hearing aid as he has reminiscences of the time of Blip, during the Blip as Ronin and at the end, losing Natasha in front of him.

Next morning, Clint goes to Kazi to have some talk while Kate visits their LARPer friends to track down the trick arrows. With the help of a cop from the LARPers, Kate manages to make a deal to get the arrows. Clint on the other hand tries to talk to Kazi about stopping Maya's vengeance as it will get her killed. We know Kazi has some soft spot for Maya, so Clint's tactic could be a fruitful one. Clint receives the arrows from the cop and leaves at night along with Kate.

They take position at the rooftop of a building opposite to the apartment where the watch is hidden. Clint tries to explain the stealth plan to Kate but Kate is already off to the building. When Kate reaches the apartment, she sets off two weird strobe lights which is revealed to be silent alarms for those who cannot hear. Maya appears in the room and punches Kate. On the other side, Clint is also busy fighting a masked person who he thinks is Maya, but isn't. We get into a long fight sequence and the masked person throws Kate off the building. Clint rushes to her but cannot hold onto (a horror of the incident on Vormir). But fortunately, Kate is wired and so she is safe. Clint cuts the wire as she falls off but she goes back to the rooftop to help him. Kate uses a shockwave arrow to stop Maya and also shoots a normal arrow to pierce her shoulder.

Maya leaves but the masked person keeps on fighting with a killing motive. The person constantly uses red lighted electrical weapons, seen specially in cases of Black Widow scenes, which confirms actually who this is. Clint takes off the mask and the person is revealed to be none other than Yelena Belova, adoptive sister of Natasha Romanoff. She jumps off the building in style as now they know who she is. Clint realizes the danger of the situation and ends his partnership with Kate at the very last scene.

Major Details

Kate and Clint sit on the table along with Jack and Eleanor, and surprisingly with a sword at the very middle of the table. Not to forget, the mugs had the hexagonal patterns with bees. It could be a stretch but, Jack Duquesne is actually the Swordsman in the comics, and the word Sword was mentioned previously in Disney+ series Wandavision. S.W.O.R.D and Hexagonal shapes were vital parts of the show. Yes it is a stretch, but you never know what Marvel has in their hands for us.

Eleanor is seen making a phone call to a mysterious, off-screen presence. Maybe Kingpin, who has been speculated to appear in future, or it could be Valentina Allegra de Fontaine aka Val. We last saw Val in the post-credits scene of Black Widow, where she told Yelena Belova that Clint Barton was the reason Natasha died. This is the very reason Yelena returns in this show, trying to kill Clint and avenge her sister.

Jack says, "Getting laughed at by family is better than being alone in the holidays, right?" which leads to Kate thinking how she has unintentionally messed up Clint's happy times with his family and now he has to spend the holidays alone. So, she goes to Clint's place to watch movies as she learnt earlier that it was movie marathon night for him and his family.

"Thanos was right" returns after we first saw the same written on the urinal at Rogers: The Musical. Clint says he can someone unconscious by shooting a coin with his hands that too being 20 feet away. Later, he is seen teaching Kate doing the same to switch on the television. In the comics, Clint learns this move from his brother, who taught him to break glass bottles with the coins. We also saw the demonstration of it in the credits of each episode. Kate talks about Boomerang arrows and Clint replies, "Why would I ever want to use a boomerang arrow?" This is actually the opposite of what Clint thinks in the comics. He is seen using boomerang arrows a lot of the times in the Fraction comics run as they easily come back. It is also used to trick the opponent and hit on the back.

Next morning, we see Kate wearing a shirt, the same one she wears in the comics with the symbol of a space dog.

Kate goes to the LARPers and meets with Officer Wendy Conrad who decides to help her find the trick arrows. Wendy Conrad is actually Bombshell in the comics, one of the several dozens of super-powered women, who fought Clint in the 1983 Hawkeye miniseries. There was a name drop of Bombshell later on the episode as she says her bag was embroidered with the word "Bombshell".

Then at the last part of the episode, comes Yelena Belova in a mask with green glasses. This is the exact costume of Yelena Belova from the comics where she was involved with Thunderbolts initiative. This further proves that Val really is forming the Thunderbolts with Yelena, US Agent, Zemo and others. She has been seen recruiting them in different movies and shows and will indeed be an important character in the future.

Yelena connects a hook with Kate before she throws her off the rooftop, showing us that she isn't really a killing machine, with no emotions, rather she has a good side and will only engage when something dear to her is taken away from her, like engaging with Clint as she has been given the information of Clint being the reason behind Natasha's death.

Final Verdict

The episode slows down the series as Clint opens up about the darker side of him being involved in SHIELD and as an Avenger. He thinks everything good done by him as an Avenger, is the result of others' advice. He thinks he had no control there and every time he had none (like Nat, his family) to keep him in check, he causes harm. Jeremy Renner's acting is outstanding, as he fulfills to express his guilt, sadness with perfection alongside the festive mood of the series. While there have been no great leads to the Jack and Tracksuit situation, the episode succeeds to bring a new character and tie it to the series as it goes nearer to the finale.

Rating: 8.25/10
